WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Poor posture is an umbrella term that describes many incorrect postures habitually developed due to our lifestyle. Poor postures often precipitate muscular tone imbalances, painful trigger points in the body, and uneven transfer of workload down the spine predisposing to an increased risk of injury. Prolonged compromised spinal health also affects the proper functioning of the nervous system such as the spinal cord and nerve roots. Many unexplained symptoms such as declining work performance, feeling lack of rest despite sleeping for long hours, irregular bowel movements and disturbed moods are very subtle yet diagnostic symptoms of poor spinal health. It is vital therefore for each of us to take care of the spinal health.

In this 3-hour Wellness Yoga for Poor Posture workshop, we make it our business to highlight some of the common poor postures developed in the society and impart the right yogic techniques to tackle them. To date, some of the poor postures identified are:

  1. Forward head-neck posture (neck protruding out) – Often developed due to continuous usage of laptop and handphone.
  2. Kyphosis (hunchback) – Often developed in school going children due to excessive weight load on the back.
  3. Lumber Hyperlordosis (exaggerated lower back curve) – Often seen in athletes and post delivery.
  4. Swayback (ears behind the shoulders) – A mixture of all three poor postures mentioned above and the commonest of all.

What can you anticipate to learn in this 3-hour workshop?

  • Specific methods of identifying poor posture and classifying it into the 4 types of posture identified.
  • Learn important poses to stretch, strengthen, and align the neck, head and shoulder region for forward head and neck posture
  • Master the poses to stretch, strengthen, and align the muscles in the core abdominal region and release muscle tightness in the lumber region for exaggerated lower back curve posture.
  • Identify specific poses to release crossed syndrome (some extreme tight muscles and some extreme weal muscles) in sway back poor posture.
  • Learn posses to open the chest, balance the muscle tone at thoracic region that could potentially correct the hunchback problem.
  • Gain knowledge on the factors leading to poor posture activities such as driving, laptop usage, sleeping, and long hour sitting and tips on correcting them systematically.

Who should attend this workshop?

This workshop caters for mild to moderate degree of poor posture such as forward head neck position, exaggerated lower back curve, hunched back and sway back.

  • Individuals (adults and children) with any of the poor posture mentioned above. *Individuals with scoliosis may attend the Wellness Yoga for Scoliosis workshop
  • Health care workers such as occupational therapist and physiotherapist
  • Lower back pain secondary to poor posture
  • Commercial vehicle drivers
  • individuals with work requiring long hour sitting
  • Any individual keen to create a healthy back
