INTRODUCTION

Pain in the neck is not the nicest thing to have in our lifetime! The neck plays a major role in our lives be it structurally or functionally. Important structures are located in the neck region. Starting from the back of the neck, we have the:

  • Cervical vertebrae C1 –C7 that allows for nodding, turning, rotating and tilting of the neck. It connects the skull to the rest of the body.
  • Baroreceptors that constantly measure the fluctuations in the blood pressure and adjust accordingly
  • Vagus nerve that controls that transmits the parasympathetic outflow
  • The sympathetic chain that relays sympathetic nerve impulses from the brain before being sent to different organs
  • The phrenic nerve that supplies the diaphragmatic muscle
  • The carotid arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the brain
  • The jugular veins that connect the brain drainage to the heart
  • The voice box that allows for vocal expression
  • Thyroid gland – the Father gland of metabolism

So many vital structures in such a compact space! Any limitation to movements in the neck region is certainly painful, frustrating and above all compromises the functioning of all these delicate structures.

The acquired cervical curve of the neck due to our evolutionary erectile locomotion has created ways for a good range of neck mobility. Unfortunately, it also makes the neck vulnerable to a high loading force in our current technological lifestyle. A forward neck posture in a computer-based job to a continuous telecommunication with fancy gadgets has accelerated the ageing of the neck bone and the spongy disc in between. Early onset cervical spondylosis, a slipped disc in the neck, cervical spinal stenosis, radiculopathy, recurring headaches and degenerative cervical arthritis are the many labels we carry upon ourselves due to this un-intervened ageing.

  • Take home tips to keep neck relaxed during daily activity.
  • Techniques to ease the pain and stretch without pain.
