INTRODUCTION

Scoliosis is the term used to describe a sideways curved spine which points out misalignment of the vertebral bones. A normal healthy spine should appear up right and straight when observed from the back of an individual. This misalignment is often missed in a growing child only to be diagnosed at late adolescence due to pain caused by glaring structural imbalances such as uneven shoulder, protuberance of one shoulder blade, uneven waist and one sided high riding waistline. Classically, when detected early, an external spinal brace supplemented with physiotherapy is the roadmap for its treatment. A severe case however requires a surgical intervention.

In the recent past, many researches have been done on the benefits of yogic poses for scoliosis and it is now largely accepted to be a supportive therapy to help people suffering from scoliosis. Yoga poses are exclusive and unique compared to regular physiotherapy as it takes into account the mind-body connections involved in correcting the spine. It is important to correct any detected spinal scoliosis at the earliest opportunity. An untreated scoliosis can lead to many symptoms depending on the area of the sideway curve.

  • Restrictive lung disease
  • Degenerative spine disease
  • Sciatica
  • Muscular pain
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Low self esteem
  • Head/Neck/Shoulder pain
  • Limitations in sports

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Wellness Yoga for Scoliosis workshop offers you just the right opportunity to get your spine UP and RIGHT. In this 3-hour workshop, learn and experience all the body poses exclusively sequenced to stretch, relax, and balance the spinal muscles. Yogic methodology imparted in this workshop addresses the following:

  • To identify and release tight muscular knots
  • To create balance in the spinal muscle
  • To identify limitations arising from different sideways curved spine (lumbar/thoracic)
  • To ease and relieve pain arising from the muscular knots.
  • To develop mindfulness towards body posture throughout daily activities
  • To identify a poor posture in wakefulness and sleep state

What can you anticipate to learn in this 3-hour workshop?

  • 5 well sequenced series of body to undo twisting of the vertebral bones, release the muscular imbalance and balance the muscle tone parallel to the spine.
  • Key techniques to relieve compressions down the spine.
  • Correct application of abdominal lock and perennial lock to maintain upright posture.
  • 5 breathing techniques to enhance the lung capacity affected due to scoliosis.
  • Tips to incorporate all poses learnt into a daily routine in just 15 minutes
  • 2 meditative techniques to tackle muscle tightness induced pain
  • Insight into improving range of motion of selected areas of the body.

  • Chronic back pain (neck and lower back pain) secondary to scoliosis
  • Family history of spinal disease/scoliosis
