INTRODUCTION

Medical surveys show that almost 70- 90% of Malaysian population suffers from a lower back pain episode at least once in their life-time. Out of this, only 10% ever attains a full recovery from lower back pain while the rest progresses into a chronic recurring back pain category. This category of people is highly dependent on muscle relaxants and pain killers for the rest of their lives without having a proper relieve for their back pain. Despite prolonged use of medication, people with lower back pain often suffer from exacerbation of symptoms frequently compromising on life quality. Many productive hours and quality life time are wasted due to under management of back pain.

This will help you feel better as you learn to manage your medical conditions and continue to enjoy the good things in life while continuing your medical treatments, diet restrictions, and etc.

MALAYSIAN HEALTH CARE GUIDELINE

“Despite all our efforts and skills for all our resources, disability stemming from back pain, especially lower back pain is getting steadily worse. The classic bio-medical model used by mainstream healthcare to treat back pain is unable to deliver cure to the patients.

The bio-psycho-social model addresses a more holistic approach to pain. It recognizes that pain does not only have biological components but also includes psychological, social and cultural influences which interact in the causation, maintenance and exacerbation of the disease. In this model, mind and body are seen as automatically intertwined rather than separated (as in biomedical model).

Using this model, the effective management of acute and chronic back pain involves not only addressing the medical or physical aspects of pain but also the psychological (mental/emotional/behavioral) and socio-cultural aspects. Passive physiotherapy alone is inappropriate and only gives short term relieve. Patients must actively participate in finding relieve for their back pain by having a daily routine to reap benefits.”

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Wellness Yoga for Lower Back Pain workshop has its foundations built on addressing back pain through the application of the aforementioned bio-psycho-social model. In this 3-hour workshop, you will experience our safe, scientific and sound yogic methodology to relieve pain and tackle a number of common lower back pain conditions such as:

  • Slipped disc
  • Generative disc disease
  • Mild spondylolisthesis
  • Sciatica
  • Nerve impingement
  • Piriformis muscle syndrome

Learning to manage the pain arising from these conditions with minimal dependency on medicinal intervention is the core intention of this workshop. Routine practices of selected yogic posture and breathing techniques have been repeatedly proven to overcome and relieve lower back pain in the long run.

What can you anticipate to learn in this 3-hour workshop?

  • Specific body posture sequenced in a coherent manner to activate, stretch and restore muscle at the lower back to its optimum functioning.
  • Selected techniques to strengthen the core muscles in the body to prevent further injury to lower back area.
  • Key methodology on safely stretching deep seated muscles such as the piriformis and psoas.
  • Breathing techniques to be incorporated into the sequence to relieve pain/irritation stemming from chronic inflammation and muscular knots.
  • Understand the mechanism of work load transfer across the spine and hip joint and to carefully utilise this knowledge to protect the lower back during demanding activities.
  • Application of the abdominal lock to adjust the curve of lower back to suit different postures.
  • Key meditation techniques to develop postural mindfulness.

  • Individuals who experience lower back pain arising from slipped disc, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, piriformis muscle syndrome and lower back Radiculopathy.
